In this whimsical collection, Bornstein poetically combines her pantheon of natural forms and unique creatures with collage. She incorporates the playful with the contemplative. Bornstein manipulates a variety of elements: handmade paper, envelopes, musical notation, thread, bones, etc. with her layers of rich color and poignant subject matter. Bornstein’s work, though playful, presents striking juxtapositions and depth. Often the structure of these pieces use a strong horizon line which both connects and separates the pictorial elements. A moon, tree, figure, beast, or geometric form, float in the sky-like space, while a saturated and often dense texture is portrayed in the lower earth-like portion; employing perhaps a dense array of collage, brick, repetitive imagery, or mysterious biomorphic forms. This imagery is executed with vibrant multi-layered color, glazes, and washes which evoke a richness and luminosity.
